Japan Backs Cambodia–Thailand Ceasefire, Vows Continued Diplomatic Efforts for Lasting Peace

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 28, 2025) — Japan has welcomed the immediate ceasefire agreement reached between Cambodia and Thailand and pledged to continue diplomatic efforts to help ensure lasting peace and stability along their shared border.

In a statement issued on the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia’s Facebook page, Press Secretary Kitamura Toshihiro of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan said Tokyo welcomes the ceasefire agreement and strongly hopes it will be steadily and fully implemented following the General Border Committee meeting held by the two countries’ defence ministers on Saturday.

Japan said it will continue to promote de-escalation through diplomatic channels in coordination with relevant partners, including the United States and ASEAN member states, to support the implementation of the ceasefire.

Earlier this month, renewed military clashes between Cambodia and Thailand resulted in civilian casualties, displacement and damage to civilian facilities in both countries. The international community, including Japan, has repeatedly urged both sides to exercise maximum restraint and pursue a peaceful resolution through dialogue.

Japan reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at sustaining peace and preventing further escalation in the region.
