PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Nov. 20, 2025) — Cambodia marked World Statistics Day by highlighting the role of statistical data in strengthening governance, transparency and public trust across all sectors.

Tep Asnarith, spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, said the observance was an opportunity for government institutions and stakeholders to promote awareness of data’s role in national development.

“Statistical information, including data derived from scientific research, is essential for informed decision-making, policy formulation and operational planning,” Tep said. “It enhances credibility, accountability and public trust in leadership.”

He cited Cambodia’s press freedom reports for 2024 and 2025 as examples of data-driven governance. The reports were based on desk reviews, independent surveys using random sampling across 25 provinces and municipalities, and consultations with journalists, officials, media associations and academic institutions.

“These findings provide a reliable foundation for modernizing institutions and strengthening Cambodia’s media landscape,” Tep said.

He contrasted the government’s approach with foreign reports that rely on incident-based data or pre-selected interviews, which he said offer limited and one-sided perspectives.

Cambodia’s own reports, Tep said, reflect a scientific, nationwide assessment of media systems, press freedom and the public’s right to information. “This study confirms Cambodia’s ownership in leading and managing the media sector,” he said.
