PM Hun Manet, Trump Reaffirm Border Peace Efforts With Thailand

Phnom Penh, Cambodia (Nov. 15, 2025) — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said he held a telephone discussion late Friday with U.S. President Donald J. Trump to review developments along the Cambodia–Thailand border and reaffirm commitments to a peace agreement between the two neighbors.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet thanked Trump for his initiative in helping secure a cease-fire and for supporting the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration, a framework signed earlier this year to promote lasting peace and cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand. He reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to uphold the declaration’s principles, including humanitarian demining along contested border areas.

President Trump underscored Washington’s position that peace between Cambodia and Thailand must be sustained, pledging to closely monitor the situation to prevent renewed armed clashes.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said Cambodia remains committed to resolving border issues peacefully through agreed mechanisms and bilateral dialogue.

The call followed recent consultations between Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who has played a mediating role in regional peace efforts. Anwar has urged both Cambodia and Thailand to adhere to the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration, which Malaysia helped broker, and has emphasized ASEAN’s responsibility to ensure stability along the border.

“On behalf of Cambodian citizens, I expressed my sincere thanks to President Trump for his initiative which contribute to the establishment of a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, as well as for achieving the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration to seek lasting peace for Cambodia and Thailand,” said Samdech Thipadei.

The Cambodia–Thailand border has long been a flashpoint, with disputes over demarcation and military skirmishes in past decades. The Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration, signed in mid-2025 under Anwar’s chairmanship, marked a rare trilateral effort involving Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand to reduce tensions and promote cross-border cooperation.
