Cambodia Launches Mine Clearance Project Away From Disputed Border
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct.06,2025) — Cambodia has launched a $5 million mine clearance initiative covering more than 41 square kilometers in six provinces bordering Thailand, aiming to improve safety and living conditions for its citizens.

The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority, which is overseeing the project, said the 453 targeted minefields are located far from the contested Cambodia-Thailand border.
The announcement follows public speculation that the operation may be linked to disputed border regions, prompting concerns over potential encroachment by Thailand once the land is cleared. Border areas remain littered with landmines left over from decades of conflict, particularly the Cambodian civil war.
During an official handover on Oct. 2, the mine clearance work was assigned to three national agencies: the Royal Cambodian Army, the National Center for Peacekeeping Forces, Mine and Explosive Remnants of War Clearance, and the Cambodian Mine Action Centre.
In a statement, the mine authority said the clearance zones are “well away” from areas of active dispute and align with the government’s broader goals of restoring safe land for development and improving livelihoods.
“The project reflects the vision of Prime Minister Hun Manet to provide secure land, rebuild communities, and offer a better future for the Cambodian people,” the statement said.
The government described the initiative as part of a long-term plan for peace, development and prosperity, emphasizing national solidarity.
Cambodia remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. Since the 1970s, landmines and unexploded ordnance have caused tens of thousands of casualties. Clearing contaminated land continues to be a national priority.
