Senate President Thanks Trump for Role in Cambodia–Thailand Ceasefire; U.S. Vows Continued Monitoring
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Sept. 5) — Acting Head of State Hun Sen on Friday thanked former U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in facilitating the July 28 ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, crediting Washington’s timely intervention for helping defuse tensions along the border.

The remarks came during a courtesy call from Bridgette L. Walker, chargé d’affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh. Walker reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to closely monitoring the truce and supporting peace efforts in the region.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen briefed Walker on the historical context and recent developments surrounding the border conflict, emphasizing that the ceasefire would not have been possible without Trump’s initiative.
He expressed deep appreciation to the former administration for its swift response, noting that U.S. involvement helped prevent further casualties among soldiers and civilians.
Despite the ceasefire, Samdech Techo Hun Sen raised concerns over continued encroachments and violations along the border. He urged the United States to remain engaged and help ensure full compliance with the agreement. Cambodia, he said, has exercised maximum restraint and deployed observers to monitor implementation.
Walker thanked Samdech Techo Hun Sen for the detailed briefing and confirmed that both Trump and the U.S. Secretary of State had been closely following the situation. She reiterated Washington’s support for a peaceful resolution and a return to normalcy between Cambodia and Thailand.
She also emphasized the importance of deploying ASEAN observers, as previously agreed by both nations, and said the United States would continue encouraging both sides to uphold that commitment.
During the meeting, Walker highlighted the positive trajectory of Cambodia–U.S. relations, noting the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties. She also thanked Cambodia for its cooperation on humanitarian issues and acknowledged U.S. assistance to displaced persons affected by the recent conflict.
