Cambodian Governor Rejects Thai Request to Relocate Border Residents
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Sept. 4, 2025) — Banteay Meanchey provincial governor Um Reatrey has rejected a request from Thailand’s Sa Kaeo provincial governor to relocate Cambodian citizens residing along the shared border.

In an official response dated Sept. 2, Reatrey stated that any decision regarding border settlements falls under the jurisdiction of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) and the Joint Commission on Demarcation for Land Boundary (JBC).

“Any unilateral activity that might affect the people residing in the area is considered a violation of the 2000 memorandum of understanding on land boundary demarcation, the ceasefire agreement reached on July 28, and the spirit of the GBC meeting held Aug. 7 in Malaysia, as well as the Extraordinary Meeting of the Regional Border Committee on Aug. 28,” the letter said.

Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire and expressed hope that upcoming bilateral meetings would yield constructive outcomes for both nations.
