Australian Member of Parliament Mark Dreyfus has called for a “principled and engaged international response” to the deadly conflict along the Cambodia–Thailand border, stating that “peace is not just the absence of war.”

His remarks came amid growing concern within the Cambodian Australian community about regional instability and the safety of people living near the border.

Speaking in Parliament on Aug. 25, Dreyfus expressed deep concern over escalating tensions in the region, warning that the effects of conflict are rarely contained.

“Civilians bear the immediate cost, but the consequences often reach far beyond the borders where violence occurs,” he said.

Dreyfus, a former attorney-general and the member for Isaacs since 2007, stressed that the situation demands a strong international response rooted in principle and engagement. He added that the global community must come together to prevent conflict and protect civilians by “upholding justice, mutual respect and dialogue.”

“Peace is not just the absence of war. It is the presence of justice, of dignity, and the belief that every person deserves to live free from fear. Achieving peace requires patience, effort and a willingness to choose dialogue over division,” he said.

In recent weeks, Dreyfus said members of the Cambodian Australian community in his electorate had reached out to express fear and anxiety about the violence near the border.

“These concerns are close, personal and deeply felt,” he said. “Many are fearful for the safety of family members and are seeking reassurance that their voices are being heard.”

He confirmed he has met with affected families and community leaders and has raised their concerns with his parliamentary colleagues.

Dreyfus described Cambodian Australians as “a vital part of the Australian community,” praising their resilience, strong family values and commitment to justice and dignity. “Their values reflect those we share as a nation,” he said.

He also welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand and voiced support for Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s call for a peaceful resolution through regional dialogue and international cooperation. “That position reflects our continued commitment to peace, the rule of law and protection of civilians in our region,” he said.

Ending his remarks, Dreyfus pledged to continue advocating for his constituents, vowing to ensure that the voices of Cambodian Australians are heard and that their calls for peace and safety are acknowledged.
