PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Aug. 25, 2025)—Cambodia and Thailand on Monday reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful border coordination and pledged to implement outcomes from recent high-level meetings, including the July 28 bilateral dialogue in Putrajaya and the Aug. 7 General Border Committee (GBC) session in Kuala Lumpur.

The agreement was reached during the Extraordinary Regional Border Committee (RBC) Meeting, hosted by Cambodia. Senior military officials from both countries endorsed plans to strengthen communication between army areas and border units, avoid clashes, and promote trust through regular engagement.

Both sides agreed in principle to establish a Coordinating Group to enhance communication among commanders, liaison teams, and operational forces along the border. They also discussed the feasibility of forming a Township Border Committee to foster cooperation between state and private institutions. In the interim, local task force commanders will meet weekly, or as needed, to address emerging issues.

The delegations were led by Lt. Gen. Ek Sam Aun, commander of Cambodia’s Military Region 5, and Vice Adm. Apichat Sapprasert, commander of Thailand’s Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defense Command. The meeting ran from 10:30 to 11:20 a.m.

Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed the outcome in a message posted to his official social media account, stating: “Welcome the positive outcomes of Cambodia-Thailand Extraordinary Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting between Cambodia’s Military Region 5 and Thailand’s Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defense Command, Monday 25 August 2025.”

The two sides also reaffirmed their cooperation in humanitarian demining and combating transnational crimes, including online scams, drug and human trafficking, and weapons smuggling. These issues will be addressed further at the upcoming GBC meeting, which both sides agreed to convene soon.

The next RBC meeting is expected to take place within one month, with Thailand as the host.
