Cambodian Government Defends Peace Efforts, Cites Historical Progress Amid Ceasefire Implementation

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Aug. 25, 2025)— Pen Bona, minister attached to the prime minister and head of the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit, reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to peace and territorial integrity during a press briefing Monday at the Office of the Council of Ministers. His remarks followed recent developments in the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.

Speaking to reporters, Pen said Cambodia has experienced its most significant period of peace and development in more than five centuries, citing advancements in infrastructure, education and mobility. He described the current era as one of “unprecedented opportunity” for Cambodian citizens, both domestically and abroad.

Pen credited former Prime Minister Hun Sen as the architect of Cambodia’s peace and stability, and said the current administration under Prime Minister Hun Manet remains firmly committed to defending peace “at any cost.” He noted that the majority of Cambodians, including religious leaders and diaspora communities, support the government’s efforts to preserve peace and national unity.

Addressing border security, Pen said the Cambodian People’s Party-led government has made the most progress in demarcating the country’s borders through peaceful negotiations and infrastructure development. He pointed to the construction of boundary markers and border roads as tangible outcomes of diplomatic engagement with neighboring countries.

“These achievements are historical facts that cannot be denied,” Pen said, adding that the government’s efforts are aimed at ensuring long-term sovereignty and stability for future generations.

The briefing comes amid continued monitoring of the ceasefire agreement signed with Thailand on July 28, which aims to de-escalate tensions and restore stability along the shared border.
