Cambodia, Japan’s Surala Net Sign Five-Year Deal to Digitize Khmer-Language Math Education
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Aug. 21, 2025) — Cambodia’s Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport signed a five-year agreement with Japanese education technology firm Surala Net Co., Ltd. to deliver Khmer-language digital mathematics instruction aimed at strengthening student and teacher capacity nationwide.

The signing ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Hang Chuon Naron, who also serves as Minister of Education, and Surala Net CEO Takayuki Yunokawa. The partnership will focus on enhancing math proficiency among primary and secondary school students through localized e-learning tools, while also building teacher capacity via education technology platforms.
Under the agreement, Surala Net will expand its digital learning program to include Khmer-language content, building on its existing offerings in English, Indonesian and Sinhala. The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of math instruction and promote the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in Cambodian classrooms.
Yunokawa said the company had previously piloted online math and science instruction for Grade 7 students in Cambodia, and the integration of Khmer into its platform marked a significant step toward broader accessibility and impact.

Deputy Prime Minister Naron praised Surala Net’s commitment to localizing its content and thanked the Japanese government for its continued support of Cambodia’s education sector. He expressed confidence that the program would help Cambodian students reach higher levels of math competency and international competitiveness.
The project also includes teacher training, curriculum development strategies, and solutions to public education challenges during the pilot phase. Cambodian officials said the collaboration aligns with national goals for sustainable development and youth empowerment through digital literacy and STEM education.
