PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Aug. 21, 2025) — Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defense reported Thursday that the situation along the country’s northern border with Thailand remains stable following the implementation of an immediate and unconditional ceasefire agreement reached last month.

Speaking at a press briefing, ministry spokesperson Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata said military forces in Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, and Banteay Meanchey provinces have maintained full control and continue to uphold the ceasefire agreement signed on July 28. The 13-point accord was reaffirmed during an extraordinary meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on Aug. 7, with observers from Malaysia, the United States, and China.

Socheata confirmed that a five-nation Interim Observer Team, led by Malaysian defense attaché Col. Nazlee bin Abdul Rahim, conducted a field inspection in Preah Vihear province to monitor compliance with the ceasefire. The team includes representatives from Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

The spokesperson also called on both sides to refrain from spreading false information, citing a GBC agreement to avoid fake news that could inflame tensions and hinder peaceful dialogue.

Cambodia reiterated its demand for the return of 18 military personnel allegedly detained by Thai forces on July 29, one day after the ceasefire took effect. Their detention has now exceeded 22 days.

“The Royal Government, the Armed Forces, and the Cambodian people stand united in defending their territory, dignity, and sovereignty,” Socheata said. “Full implementation of the ceasefire will help restore peace, stability, and normalcy between our two countries.”
