PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Aug. 19, 2025) — Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Sokha issued a strongly worded statement Tuesday condemning recent remarks by Thailand’s acting prime minister regarding the potential arrest of Cambodian leaders if found on Thai soil.

In the statement, the deputy prime minister described the comments as “reckless and undiplomatic,” warning that such rhetoric undermines regional stability and violates principles of international law. He urged Thai leadership to demonstrate maturity and respect in handling bilateral relations, particularly in the wake of the July 28 ceasefire agreement between the two countries.

“It is deeply disappointing to hear threats of legal action against Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet,” the statement read. “Such remarks reflect a lack of understanding of international norms and diplomatic conduct.”

The Cambodian official emphasized that Cambodia remains committed to peace and regional cooperation, but will not tolerate provocations that threaten its sovereignty or dignity. He called on Thai leaders to learn from Cambodia’s diplomatic approach, which he described as principled, disciplined, and grounded in international law.

The statement also referenced growing recognition among Thai analysts and youth of Cambodia’s leadership experience and regional standing, citing recent public commentary praising Hun Sen’s statesmanship.

“Cambodia may be economically smaller, but it carries itself with dignity,” the deputy prime minister said. “We stand united behind our leaders and will continue to uphold national honor and political discipline.”

The remarks come amid heightened tensions following border clashes and political exchanges between the two governments. Cambodian officials have called for restraint and constructive dialogue to avoid further escalation.
