PHNOM PENH, March 23, 2026 (KPT) — Displaced residents from Banteay Meanchey province say they remain hopeful of returning to their homes despite being relocated to new government-built shelters, as Thai forces continue to occupy parts of Cambodian territory.

Many families fled in late 2025 after Thai troops reportedly placed containers and debris around their properties, forcing evacuation. Residents now call for the removal of those obstacles to allow them to reclaim their land.

“I appreciate the new shelter, it is more comfortable than the previous safety center, but I long to return home,” said Mao Savet, 56, who had lived in her house for four decades. Another resident, Chea Khang, voiced support for the government’s peaceful efforts to restore occupied land.

The new shelters, located in Slakram village, Svay Chek district, can accommodate about 3,000 families, with facilities including electricity, water, paved roads, schools and medical services.

Authorities said 822 families have already moved in, with a second round of allocations set for April 10 ahead of the rainy season.

Prime Minister Hun Manet has stressed that providing temporary housing does not compromise Cambodia’s determination to reclaim territory.

He said the government is pursuing diplomatic and peaceful mechanisms to secure the return of homes and land.

Residents expressed continued faith in the government’s approach, saying they are willing to wait for eventual restoration, even if the process takes time.
