PHNOM PENH, Mar. 25, 2026 (KPT) — Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin has hailed the opening of the Cambodia–China Friendship Mekong Kratie Bridge, describing it as a major new achievement in bilateral cooperation.

In a post on his official social media Wednesday, Wang congratulated Cambodia on the bridge’s inauguration, noting it is the longest built by China in the country.

He said the project represents continued cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and stands as a symbol of deepening ties between the two nations.

Located in Kratie province, the bridge stretches 1,761 metres in length and 13.5 metres in width, with two vehicle lanes, separate motorcycle lanes and pedestrian walkways.

It also provides navigation clearance for river traffic, linking National Roads 6 and 7 to strengthen transport across Cambodia’s north eastern and central western regions.

The $114 million project was financed through concessional loans from China, built by Shanghai Construction Group and supervised by Guangzhou Wanan Engineering Consulting.

Groundbreaking took place in January 2023 under the presidency of Hun Sen, now Senate president.

The bridge will improve logistics in agriculture, agro industry and tourism, while easing travel for residents by reducing reliance on ferries and improving access to schools, hospitals and essential services.

The project is also seen as contributing to broader regional connectivity, reinforcing Cambodia’s domestic transport network and supporting integration within ASEAN and the Greater Mekong Subregion.
