PHNOM PENH, March 27, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has underscored the strength of its partnership with Japan, describing decades of cooperation as vital to national development and resilience, particularly amid ongoing tensions with neighboring Thailand.

Political analyst Yang Peou said Japan has consistently supported Cambodia’s peace and development efforts, including during the recent border conflict.

“Japan has joined Cambodia in seeking peace in the past, and it continues to do so now,” he said, noting Tokyo’s assistance following clashes last year.

He described the relationship as “very comfortable diplomatically,” with strong ties at both government and community levels, and urged further expansion beyond existing strategic frameworks.

Japanese investment has played a significant role in Cambodia’s economy, providing quality products, supporting local industries and contributing to human resource development.

Peou said continued humanitarian aid and investment would be essential for sustaining growth.

The importance of Japanese support was highlighted on March 26 with the inauguration of a $30 million clean water treatment plant in Svay Rieng. Prime Minister Hun Manet praised Japan’s contributions, expressing hope for further projects.

Japanese Ambassador Ueno Atsushi confirmed Tokyo’s assistance since mid 2025, including nearly $20 million in emergency aid for mine clearance and displaced families.

Earlier relief worth $1.8 million was delivered through international agencies, while new programs since January 2026 have targeted returning workers and vulnerable groups.

Japan remains one of Cambodia’s key development partners, with cooperation spanning infrastructure, humanitarian aid and post conflict recovery.

Analysts say the enduring partnership demonstrates the impact of sustained international cooperation, providing both immediate relief and long term support during periods of regional uncertainty.
