Svay Rieng Faces Tough Away Test as Shopee Cup Match Relocated to Hanoi

PHNOM PENH, April 17, 2026 (KPT) – Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC will face a crucial ASEAN Club Championship (Shopee Cup) group stage clash against Bangkok United at a neutral venue in Hanoi, after the fixture was moved from Phnom Penh due to security concerns.

The match, originally set for January 29 at Morodok Techo National Stadium, was postponed following objections from the Thai side amid heightened tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border. Tournament organizers have rescheduled the game for April 22 at Hang Day Stadium.

The relocation strips the Cambodian champions of home advantage in a decisive tie. Club General Manager Christopher Grant said the decision was imposed by competition authorities despite assurances that Phnom Penh could host the match safely.

“We fully understand the frustration of our fans. However, this decision was not made by the club,” Grant said, adding that Svay Rieng had submitted detailed safety guarantees and warned of the sporting impact, including extra travel and fixture congestion.

Grant noted that non-compliance could trigger heavy sanctions, including fines of up to $1 million and possible exclusion from regional tournaments. “We had no choice but to proceed,” he said.

Despite the setback, Svay Rieng vowed to remain focused on representing Cambodia at regional level and urged supporters to rally behind the team as they prepare for a demanding test against one of Thailand’s top clubs.
