Cambodia Warns of Tougher Action Over Illegal Activity in Prey Lang Sanctuary

PHNOM PENH, April 20, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Environment Ministry has warned it will take tougher legal action against illegal activities in protected forests after the arrest of a man accused of clearing land in the Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary.
Authorities said forest rangers detained Sem Chhai on April 7 in Beoung Char village, Sambo District, accusing him of unauthorized land clearing inside the sanctuary, one of the country’s largest lowland forest ecosystems.
He was sent to the Kratie Provincial Court, which ordered his detention on April 9 pending further proceedings.
The ministry said the case underscores efforts to combat illegal encroachment, land grabbing and deforestation in protected areas.
Officials pledged to intensify enforcement operations as part of broader measures to safeguard Cambodia’s natural resources and preserve remaining forest ecosystems.
