Cambodia Highlights Press Freedom Gains, Pledges Stronger Media Governance in Digital Era
PHNOM PENH, April 30, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia marked World Press Freedom Day by highlighting progress in journalist protection and pledging to strengthen media governance frameworks in response to rapid digital transformation, officials said Wednesday.
At a national conference, Information Ministry spokesperson Tep Asnarith said recent survey results showed a “positive trajectory” in the media environment, with more than 70 percent of journalists reporting no threats or harassment in the past year, and 84.6 percent saying they had not faced legal complaints.

He noted the ministry had intervened to support journalists, including facilitating releases, mediating disputes and providing legal protection in court cases.
Asnarith stressed that legal and regulatory updates were aimed at addressing risks linked to digital platforms and artificial intelligence, including misinformation, while reinforcing professionalism, ethics and public trust.
Nop Vy, executive director of CamboJA, acknowledged improved engagement between authorities and journalists but pointed to financial pressures and the challenges of reporting in the digital era.
UNESCO’s Esther McFarlane said a free and well functioning media sector was vital for resilient societies, adding that Cambodia’s dialogue with partners was key to ensuring reforms strengthen the media ecosystem.
