Cambodia, Philippines Discuss ASEAN Role in Thai Border Tensions

PHNOM PENH, May 2, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s foreign minister has held talks with his Philippine counterpart on regional diplomacy and efforts to ease tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
In a telephone conversation on April 30, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn spoke with Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Maria Theresa P. Lazaro.
Sokhonn expressed appreciation for the Philippines’ role as ASEAN chair, highlighting its efforts to facilitate dialogue among member states aimed at resolving the border situation.
Both ministers underscored the importance of maintaining ASEAN unity and its central role in promoting peace and stability in the region.
Lazaro reaffirmed Manila’s commitment to overseeing the ASEAN Observer Team monitoring developments along the disputed frontier.
She also reiterated the Philippines’ readiness, as ASEAN chair, to provide a platform for constructive dialogue toward a lasting resolution.
The two sides underlined their close bilateral ties and shared commitment to regional cooperation, stressing continued engagement to support peace and security in Southeast Asia.
