Cambodia’s Foreign Minister Voices Regret over Thai Plan to Quit 2001 Maritime Pact

PHNOM PENH, May 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s foreign minister has expressed disappointment at Thailand’s reported intention to withdraw from a key maritime agreement signed in 2001.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn said the memorandum of understanding remains a vital framework reflecting the “genuine political will” of both countries to jointly manage resources in overlapping claims areas.

Speaking to reporters, Sokhonn warned that a unilateral withdrawal would be “most regrettable” and undermine the cooperative spirit underpinning the deal, which governs disputed parts of the continental shelf.

He recalled earlier statements by Cambodia’s foreign ministry in April stressing that the MoU was designed to deliver mutual benefit while supporting maritime boundary talks under international law.

Despite Thailand’s move, Sokhonn reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to the “letter and spirit” of the 2001 accord and the goodwill that led to its signing.

Officials in Phnom Penh said further clarification on the issue is expected in the coming days.
