PHNOM PENH, May 8, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is intensifying efforts to strengthen its engineering workforce after the number of registered engineers surpassed 10,000 in 2025, officials said Wednesday.

The update was presented at a meeting of the Engineering Council of Cambodia chaired by Labour and Vocational Training Minister Heng Sour. The council reported 10,172 registered engineers last year, including 44 foreign nationals, while more than 14,000 engineers received professional and technical training.

The council has expanded registration, training and outreach nationwide, while also deepening cooperation with ASEAN partners and educational institutions to align Cambodia’s engineering standards with regional benchmarks.

Minister Sour urged stronger professional standards and wider public awareness of engineering registration, stressing the need for improved training programs to meet rising demand in infrastructure, industry and technology.

He said Cambodia’s rapid development requires a larger pool of qualified engineers to support projects ranging from transport networks and industrial zones to digital innovation.

He also called for closer collaboration with domestic and international institutions to boost competitiveness and ensure Cambodian engineers can contribute to regional and global markets. The council’s initiatives, he added, are part of broader government efforts to build human capital and sustain economic growth.

The engineering remains a critical sector for Cambodia’s industrialization and modernization, with demand expected to rise as the country pursues infrastructure expansion and technological advancement.
