CHENGDU, May 20, 2026 (KPT) — National Bank of Cambodia Governor Chea Serey has underlined the vital role of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in driving economic growth, calling for stronger financial inclusion and innovation during a panel at the PBCSF Global Finance Forum in Chengdu on May 19.

Speaking on the theme “Financial Inclusion and Financing for MSMEs,” Chea Serey shared Cambodia’s experience in expanding access to finance and supporting MSME development, stressing the importance of digital innovation, financial infrastructure and targeted policy measures. She highlighted the Bakong payment system as a key tool in boosting inclusion, improving efficiency and creating new opportunities for MSMEs.

The governor joined fellow speakers including AFI Executive Director Alfred Hannig, Bei Duoguang of Renmin University and Ma Honglin of Chengdu Jiaozi Financial Holding Group.

Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation says MSMEs account for more than 97 percent of enterprises nationwide, employing over 70 percent of the workforce and contributing around 58 percent of GDP. The government has prioritized MSME support through financing schemes, digital adoption and regional cooperation to strengthen competitiveness and resilience.

Chea Serey urged closer collaboration between financial institutions, policymakers and development partners to overcome challenges and expand inclusive finance for MSMEs.
