PHNOM PENH, May 20, 2026 (KPT)– Cambodia’s acting head of state, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, has extended warm congratulations to Timor-Leste on the occasion of its 24th National Day, lauding the country’s progress and its recent accession to ASEAN.

In a letter dated May 20 and addressed to President José Ramos-Horta, Samdech Techo Hun Sen conveyed his “sincere congratulations and best wishes” to the government and people of Timor-Leste.

He described the nation’s development as “remarkable,” reflecting the resilience of its people and leadership, and voiced confidence in its continued prosperity.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen reaffirmed Cambodia’s support as a longstanding partner, stressing that closer cooperation between the two countries has gained new significance following Timor-Leste’s entry into ASEAN.

Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, became ASEAN’s 11th member in 2025 after years of preparation.

Its admission is seen as a milestone in completing the bloc’s geographic reach across mainland Southeast Asia.

President Ramos-Horta, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and veteran independence leader, has prioritized strengthening international partnerships and advancing economic growth since returning to office.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Cambodia and Timor-Leste should work together to promote peace, stability and shared prosperity in a rapidly changing global environment.
