Cambodia Moves to Strengthen EV Safety Awareness Amid Growing Electric Vehicle Adoption

PHNOM PENH, May 21, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia is stepping up efforts to improve electric vehicle (EV) safety awareness as adoption grows and investment in green transportation expands, officials said Thursday.

The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI) has issued new instructions requiring companies involved in the production, importation, and distribution of EVs to strengthen consumer education and safety measures.

Officials noted that some EV users in Cambodia still have limited understanding of basic safety practices, posing potential risks to drivers, passengers, property, and the environment.

Under the new measures, EV companies must prepare Khmer-language safety guidelines with illustrations covering emergency situations such as battery fires, overheating during charging, electrical short circuits, flooding risks, and system failures. Businesses are also required to produce short educational videos and provide direct safety training to customers before handing over vehicles.

MISTI further instructed all EV companies to ensure vehicles comply with Cambodian standards and technical safety regulations while cooperating with government inspectors.

The ministry’s guidance comes as Cambodia continues promoting cleaner transportation and sustainable development, with EV adoption gradually increasing nationwide.

Officials said strengthening safety awareness and technical compliance is essential to building public confidence in EV technology and reducing risks associated with battery systems, charging infrastructure, and extreme weather conditions such as flooding during the rainy season.
