Cambodia adopts 45 new national standards to boost competitiveness, trade

PHNOM PENH, July 14, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has adopted 45 new national standards aligned with international and regional benchmarks, aiming to strengthen industrial competitiveness, improve product quality and safety, and enhance its position in global trade, officials said Monday.

The National Standards Council approved 43 new international and regional standards and two revised Cambodian standards at its 33rd meeting. The package includes 13 European Standards (Eurocodes), 26 ISO standards, four IEC standards and two revised national standards.

Covering industries from construction and engineering to chemicals, electronics, vehicles, cosmetics, rubber and wood products, the standards were reviewed by eight technical committees before final endorsement.

Industry Minister Hem Vanndy, who chairs the council, said standards have become a strategic tool for protecting Cambodia’s economic interests. “International trade is increasingly governed by standards. If we do not participate in developing those standards, we cannot effectively safeguard the interests of our businesses and exporters,” he said.

He highlighted Cambodia’s growing engagement with ISO, IEC and Codex Alimentarius, noting that full ISO membership gives the country voting rights and a greater role in shaping global standards. “By becoming a full member of ISO, Cambodia is no longer simply an observer. We now have a voice to defend our interests and help shape standards that affect our economy,” he added.

The council also proposed that ministries represent Cambodia on technical committees of international standardization bodies. Officials said the new standards will underpin future regulations, strengthen consumer protection, facilitate trade and support sustainable growth in line with global benchmarks.
