Cambodia’s Prak Sokhonn Reaffirms Firm Stand on Compulsory Conciliation in Talks with Thai Counterpart

NEW YORK, May 28, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn has reiterated Phnom Penh’s firm position on pursuing compulsory conciliation under international law during talks with his Thai counterpart in New York.

Prak Sokhonn met Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow on May 26 on the sidelines of the United Nations Security Council High-Level Open Debate.

According to Cambodia’s foreign ministry, the two ministers discussed the border situation following recent diplomatic efforts at the ASEAN Summit in Cebu earlier this month.

During the meeting, Prak Sokhonn underscored Cambodia’s stance on initiating compulsory conciliation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

He also called for the “full and effective implementation” of the Joint Statement signed by Cambodia and Thailand on December 27, 2025.

The Cambodian minister said Phnom Penh remained ready to work with Bangkok on confidence-building measures agreed by the two prime ministers in Cebu, aiming to rebuild trust and achieve a lasting solution.

Despite continuing disagreements, both countries pledged to maintain regular communication as diplomatic efforts move forward.
