NEW YORK, May 28, (KPT)— Germany has expressed its readiness to serve as an “honest broker” in efforts to resolve the ongoing border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand.

The offer was disclosed in a press release from Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation following a bilateral meeting in New York between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Germany’s Minister of State for Europe, Gunther Krichbaum.

“The German side expressed its willingness to serve as an ‘honest broker’ to help resolve the issue,” the ministry said.

According to the statement, Krichbaum acknowledged the seriousness of the border situation and the plight of displaced populations, stressing that Germany was prepared to act as mediator to help settle the dispute.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of a high-level United Nations Security Council debate. Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to international law, mutual respect, and peaceful settlement of disputes, underscoring the importance of regional stability.

Political analyst Chey Tech welcomed Germany’s interest, calling it a positive development. He noted Germany’s diplomatic weight as a leading European power with strong ties to both Phnom Penh and Bangkok.

He also highlighted a unique leverage point: Thailand’s current king spent much of his youth in Germany, potentially easing mediation efforts.

Tech suggested that a joint European initiative could yield lasting results. “If Germany and France work together to resolve Thailand’s invasion of Cambodia, good results are possible,” he said, adding that Germany could lead mediation while France provides technical cooperation, legal frameworks, and historical documents.

The diplomatic push comes at a sensitive time. Addressing the UN Security Council, Prak Sokhonn warned that existing ceasefire and peace agreements with Thailand remain fragile amid recent territorial incursions.

He urged all parties to respect international law and treaties in good faith, and called on the international community to support diplomatic efforts to restore trust, ensure stability, and allow displaced civilians to return home safely.
