Cambodia Expands TVET Modernization to Build Industry-Ready Workforce

PHNOM PENH, June 15, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is accelerating the modernization of its technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system to build an industry-ready workforce and support economic transformation, Labour and Vocational Training Minister Heng Sour said Monday.

Speaking at the 9th National TVET Day under the theme “TVET Provides Skills, Jobs and Income,” Sour highlighted government investments in modern training facilities, advanced technologies, industry partnerships, and workforce development programs tailored to labor market needs.

He said vocational education is central to developing human capital by equipping learners with practical skills and workplace readiness, while helping address shortages across key sectors.

As of May, Cambodia had 262 TVET institutions — both public and private — offering short-, medium-, and long-term training programs aligned with industry demand. Nearly 700,000 people have received training over the past five years.

A flagship program launched in 2024 targets 1.5 million youth from poor and vulnerable households. About 271,000 trainees have so far enrolled in free courses with financial support.

To improve access, the ministry has introduced flexible schedules, online platforms, and mobile training units to reach communities nationwide. Partnerships with more than 500 companies and industry associations provide internships, apprenticeships, and job opportunities.

Collaboration with international firms including Honda, Daikin, Toyota-linked partners, and BYD is helping modernize training in automotive technology, advanced manufacturing, digital skills, and emerging industries.

Sour said TVET programs are increasingly aligned with priority sectors under Cambodia’s industrial development strategy, including agro-processing, food processing, electronics, automotive manufacturing, medical equipment, digital technology, and semiconductors.
