PHNOM PENH, June 16, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Techo International Airport has been named among the world’s most beautiful airports in the 2026 Prix Versailles World Selection, a recognition of its architectural design, cultural integration and emphasis on sustainability.

The announcement places the new Phnom Penh gateway alongside major international projects in the United States, Germany, China and India, underscoring Cambodia’s rising profile in global architecture and infrastructure development.

The Prix Versailles awards, unveiled annually at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, celebrate excellence in architecture and design across categories including airports, hotels and commercial complexes.

Criteria cover creativity, innovation, local heritage, environmental efficiency and social impact. The jury noted that modern airports are no longer “simply places of transit” but symbols of “economic, cultural and social dynamism.”

Developed by the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC) and designed by UK‑based Foster + Partners, Techo International features a signature roof inspired by the rumdul flower, Cambodia’s national blossom.

The design incorporates motifs from Khmer temples, the Royal Palace and traditional weaving techniques, blending modern engineering with cultural heritage.

The terminal emphasizes sustainability through natural light and ventilation to reduce energy use, while indoor greenery and native plants create a natural environment for passengers.

The recognition comes as Cambodia’s aviation sector expands rapidly. The State Secretariat of Civil Aviation reported nearly 7 million air passengers in 2025 and projects 8 million in 2026, served by 36 airlines flying to 52 destinations.

Officials said the award highlights Cambodia’s ambition to present a distinctive national identity globally while strengthening tourism, connectivity and long‑term transport development.
