PHNOM PENH, June 26, 2026 (KPT) — British companies are increasingly exploring opportunities in Cambodia’s renewable energy sector and green industrial development as the Kingdom advances its energy transition and sustainability goals, British Ambassador Dominic Williams said Thursday.

Speaking in an interview with Cambodia in Focus, Williams noted growing interest from UK firms in renewable energy, battery storage systems and sustainable industrial infrastructure. He said Britain, a global leader in renewable power, has extensive expertise in integrating clean energy into national grids.

“We’ve got a lot of companies that are very experienced in renewable energy,” he said.

Williams highlighted cooperation on a proposed Green Special Economic Zone, designed as a sustainable manufacturing hub powered by renewable energy. A joint feasibility study funded by the UK and Cambodian governments is examining its technical and commercial viability.

The ambassador said the initiative responds to rising demand from global brands seeking greener supply chains. He also pointed to opportunities linked to battery storage and the ASEAN Power Grid, noting Cambodia’s abundant solar resources could position the country as a future regional energy supplier.

Cambodia currently generates more than 63 percent of its electricity from clean sources, including hydropower and solar, and aims to raise that share to at least 70 percent by 2030. The government is expanding renewable capacity, rolling out electric vehicle charging networks and promoting cleaner energy use across transport, industry and agriculture.

Construction began in April on the US$1 billion Upper Tatay Pumped Storage Hydropower Project, Cambodia’s first such facility, which is expected to improve grid reliability and support the clean energy transition.
