Cambodia Reaffirms ‘Heart‑to‑Heart’ Partnership With Japan
PHNOM PENH, July 3, 2026 (KPT)— Cambodia reaffirmed its “Heart‑to‑Heart” partnership with Japan on Friday as National Assembly President Khuon Sudary received a farewell courtesy call from Japanese Ambassador Ueno Atsushi, praising his role in strengthening bilateral ties during his mission.
Sudary thanked Japan for more than three decades of support for Cambodia’s peacebuilding, reconstruction and socio‑economic development, noting that relations advanced further after being elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023.

She said Japan’s support for ceasefire efforts and humanitarian assistance related to the Cambodia–Thailand border reflected the two countries’ close friendship, while reaffirming Cambodia’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully under international law.
Highlighting economic ties, Sudary said bilateral trade surpassed US$2.5 billion in 2025, while Japan has invested about US$2.9 billion since 1994. She noted that around 69,000 Cambodian skilled workers are employed in Japan and praised scholarship programs for helping develop human resources. She called for expanded cooperation in digital transformation, parliamentary modernization and capacity building.
Ambassador Ueno said he was honored to serve in Cambodia during a period when relations were upgraded, strengthening cooperation across political, economic, cultural, healthcare and tourism sectors. He reaffirmed Japan’s support for Cambodia’s peaceful dispute resolution and expressed confidence that parliamentary exchanges would deepen.
Sudary wished him success in his new post as Japan’s ambassador to Indonesia, expressing confidence that the strong foundation built over 73 years of diplomatic relations would continue to benefit both countries.
