Canada Explores LNG Supply Cooperation with Cambodia
PHNOM PENH, July 3, 2026 (KPT) –Cambodia’s Mines and Energy Minister Keo Rottanak has met Canadian Ambassador Christian DesRoches to discuss Canadian companies’ interest in supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Cambodia.

According to the ministry, the talks focused on potential LNG cooperation alongside Cambodia’s fast‑growing electricity sector. DesRoches highlighted Canadian firms’ interest in contributing to Cambodia’s energy diversification and supporting the country’s development goals.
Cambodia has been seeking to broaden its energy mix as demand rises, with LNG seen as a possible addition to complement hydropower, coal and renewable sources. Rottanak welcomed Canada’s engagement and said Cambodia valued partnerships that could strengthen energy security and sustainability.

The meeting comes as Cambodia’s fuel imports continue to climb amid rising global oil prices since early March, driven by tensions in the Middle East. Customs data show Cambodia imported mineral fuels, mineral oils and related products worth more than US$2 billion in the first five months of 2026, a year‑on‑year increase of over 27 percent. The surge underscores the country’s reliance on foreign supplies to meet domestic demand.
