Cambodia’s CHRC Raises Thailand Border Dispute in Human Rights Talks With UK, Seeks UK Engagement

PHNOM PENH, July 23, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Human Rights Committee (CHRC) has raised concerns over its border dispute with Thailand during talks with the British Embassy, while also seeking deeper cooperation on human rights.

Vice President Keo Sothie met Abigail Fryer, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy, at CHRC headquarters on July 22. Speaking on behalf of CHRC President Keo Remy, Sothie welcomed Fryer and praised the UK’s historical role in Cambodia’s peacebuilding and development.

He briefed the diplomat on alleged Thai military actions along the border, including encroachment and sovereignty disputes, saying they had created human rights concerns for Cambodian citizens.

The CHRC said it had issued statements, submitted 60 complaints to international and regional mechanisms, and conducted 10 field visits to support soldiers, families and displaced people.

It also led a delegation to Geneva to present Cambodia’s position before the UN Human Rights Council.

Fryer expressed concern over the impacts and urged peaceful resolution, while also raising broader human rights and freedom issues in Cambodia.

Sothie outlined the CHRC’s role in preparing six national reports and promoting international standards among institutions and communities.

Both sides agreed there were areas for potential cooperation and voiced optimism about strengthening Cambodia‑UK relations in human rights.
