Over 10 million mobile banking accounts signal Cambodia’s rapid digital finance expansion

PHNOM PENH, 2 March 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s digital financial ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with more than 10 million mobile banking accounts now active nationwide, according to the National Bank of Cambodia’s 2025 report.

Kea Boran, Chief Executive Officer of AMK Microfinance Institution, said the steady rise reflects growing public confidence in digital services and improvements in supporting infrastructure.

While the figure represents accounts rather than unique users – as individuals may hold multiple accounts – it underscores the rapid adoption of digital payments across the country.

Data from Credit Bureau Cambodia shows more than 5 million Cambodians currently access credit services, highlighting broader progress in financial inclusion.

Industry leaders attribute the surge to increased digital literacy and stronger infrastructure, particularly the rollout of the Bakong payment system and nationwide integration of KHQR codes.

Before Bakong, interbank transfers were slow, costly and inconvenient. Today, consumers can make seamless cashless payments – from supermarkets to traditional markets – with faster processing and lower fees.

Officials note the central bank does not charge service fees for Bakong, and many institutions have followed suit, making digital transactions more affordable and accessible for small and medium users.
