Cambodia Expects Angkor Equinox to Draw Thousands of Tourists
PHNOM PENH, Feb 27, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia expects thousands of visitors to converge on Angkor Wat next month to witness the spectacular Equinox phenomenon, when the rising sun aligns perfectly with the temple’s central tower, officials said Friday.
The Ministry of Tourism said the solar alignment highlights the architectural genius of the ancient Khmer civilization, reflecting advanced astronomical knowledge, spiritual beliefs, and meticulous temple design.

The Equinox occurs twice a year, around March 21–23 and September 21–23. Between 5:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on those dates, the sun rises directly above Angkor Wat’s central tower, creating a striking visual spectacle that has become one of Cambodia’s most anticipated cultural events.
Thousands of domestic and international tourists gather at the temple’s western entrance to witness and photograph the sunrise, making the Angkor Equinox a highlight of the tourism calendar.
The ministry has urged the public and visitors to join the event under the slogans: “Tourism for All, All for Tourism – Tourism Grows in Peace” and “Each Person is an Ambassador for Cambodia’s Tourism.”
Officials said the phenomenon will further strengthen Cambodia’s image as a safe, culturally rich destination and boost visitor arrivals in the early months of the year.
