Cambodia approves new Ratanakiri airport to boost investment, tourism
PHNOM PENH, Feb 27, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has approved in principle the construction of a new international-standard airport in Ratanakiri Province, aiming to unlock investment and accelerate tourism in the country’s northeast, officials said Friday.
The project, covering about 1,905 hectares along National Road 76 in Lumphat District, was endorsed by Prime Minister Hun Manet under a public–private partnership model. The site is strategically located between Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri and Stung Treng provinces, an area long seen as rich in eco-tourism, agriculture and cross-border trade.

Provincial governor Nhem Sam Oeun said the airport would improve regional connectivity, cut travel time to remote destinations and strengthen tourism diversification beyond Cambodia’s traditional hubs.
The government has invited private sector participation, with feasibility and impact studies underway. If no partner is secured, the state has indicated it may proceed independently. Construction is expected to take about three years once finalized.
