Cambodia Calls Power Firms to Build EV Charging Network as Registrations Top 10,000
PHNOM PENH, Jan 28, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is entering a new phase of electric vehicle (EV) development as authorities urge electricity providers to invest in charging infrastructure, responding to a surge in registrations that has outpaced the country’s current capacity.
The Electricity Authority of Cambodia has called on licensed service providers to study the feasibility of establishing charging stations nationwide, marking a shift from policy planning to practical rollout.

As of early 2024, the country had just 21 charging locations with 27 units. By September 2025, however, registrations had climbed to 10,568 vehicles, including 7,187 electric cars, 671 three-wheelers and 2,710 motorcycles.
Officials say expanding the network is essential not only to meet rising demand but also to encourage more Cambodians and businesses to move away from fuel-powered transport.
The push aligns with Cambodia’s pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and follows the launch of the National Policy on Electric Vehicle Development 2024–2030, a roadmap for the sector.
Phan Rim, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said EV adoption is a fast-growing global trend and Cambodia is positioning itself to align with regional and international developments in clean mobility.
Beyond environmental benefits, the government is stressing economic gains. Mines and Energy Minister Keo Rottanak said clean energy adoption not only reduces emissions but can lower operating costs for businesses in transport and logistics.
“Using electric vehicles is not only about protecting the environment,” he said, “but also about reducing expenses and improving business efficiency.”
