PHNOM PENH, Jan 23, 2026 (KPT) – The ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) has praised Cambodia’s progress in developing its digital payment system, describing it as a model for other countries seeking to modernize their financial infrastructure.

The remarks came Thursday during a meeting between Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), and AMRO President Yasuto Watanabe at NBC headquarters.

Both sides discussed Cambodia’s economic outlook, challenges, the continued development of the national payment system and the application of artificial intelligence in financial services.

Watanabe commended Cambodia’s digital payment advances, noting that several countries had looked to the system as an example. He also expressed AMRO’s commitment to further strengthen cooperation with the NBC.

Governor Serey highlighted the strong partnership between NBC and AMRO, thanking the organization for supporting capacity-building programs for Cambodian officials. She emphasized modernization of payment infrastructure and innovative services that promote the use of the riel and expand financial inclusion.

Both sides also noted positive trends in Cambodia’s export growth, with more diversified products and markets, despite ongoing challenges in the construction and real estate sectors.
