PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct. 27, 2025) — Cambodia officially inaugurated the New Energy Vehicle and Industrial Technology Institute (NEVITI) on October 27, marking a major step toward advancing electric vehicle (EV) research, technical training, and innovation.

The institute was established through a partnership between Chongqing University of Technology (CQUT), GTV Motor Co., Ltd., and the National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia (NPIC). It aims to develop skilled human resources in EV engineering and new energy technologies, supporting Cambodia’s shift toward sustainable and high-value manufacturing.

“The establishment of NEVITI will help strengthen infrastructure for Cambodia’s automotive sector and aligns with the National Policy on the Development of Electric Vehicles 2024–2030,” said Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation.

Cambodia’s National Electric Vehicle Policy aims to register 770,000 electric vehicles by 2030, positioning the sector as a driver of economic diversification, environmental sustainability, and energy resilience. As of mid-2025, the country had recorded 1,614 EV registrations, including 914 electric scooters and 440 three-wheelers. Nationwide, 21 battery charging stations are currently in operation.

NEVITI builds on earlier cooperation that sent Cambodian experts to specialized EV training in Chongqing, China. It supports national frameworks including the Industrial Development Policy 2015–2025 and Cambodia’s carbon neutrality strategy.

Cambodia’s automotive ecosystem now includes eight car assembly plants, multiple motorbike and electric tuk-tuk facilities, and eight tire factories serving global markets. Vanndy said this base positions Cambodia to join the global EV supply chain, which is projected to grow significantly by 2030.

He urged NEVITI to help develop national standards and support testing, certification, and competitiveness in the sector.
