PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Sept.15,2025) — Cambodia’s newly operational Techo International Airport is being hailed not only as a gateway for global tourists but as a strategic engine for trade and economic expansion.

Ho Vanndy, secretary-general of the National Tourism Alliance, said the $2 billion airport, which began operations Sept. 9, marks a turning point for Cambodia’s connectivity and competitiveness. “This isn’t just about tourism,” Vanndy told Kampuchea Thmey. “It’s about unlocking trade potential and positioning Cambodia as a regional hub.”

The airport’s extended runway, capable of accommodating jumbo jets and light aircraft, is expected to boost import-export activity and attract more than 30 international airlines preparing routes to Phnom Penh. Vanndy emphasized that tourism and trade are interdependent, requiring regional and global integration.

“Tourists don’t just visit one country—they explore several. Our airport now connects Cambodia to the region and the world,” he said.

Sar Sarin, president of Channel airline ticket agency, called the airport a “symbol of national pride” and a magnet for foreign investment. He noted that Emirates and Turkish Airlines are preparing to launch direct flights to Cambodia, a move aligned with government policies aimed at increasing international access.

The Techo International Airport is designed to scale in three phases. The first, completed this year, will handle 13 million passengers annually. The second phase, set for completion in 2030, will expand capacity to 30 million, while the final phase in 2050 aims to serve 50 million passengers.

Private tourism stakeholders say they are ready to collaborate with the government to leverage the airport’s impact on Cambodia’s economy. “We’re not just welcoming tourists,” Sarin said. “We’re inviting the world to invest, trade, and grow with us.”
