Rare Sunrise of Angkor Equinox Set to Draw Crowds This Week
PHNOM PENH, Mar. 17, 2026 (KPT) — A rare solar phenomenon known as the Angkor equinox will take place from March 21 to 23, drawing thousands of visitors to witness the sunrise perfectly aligned with the central tower of Angkor Wat.
The event, visible between 5:00 and 6:30 a.m., offers a striking view as the sun rises directly above the temple’s spire. Occurring twice a year, in March and September, the equinox highlights the architectural precision and astronomical knowledge of the ancient Khmer civilization.

Experts say the alignment reflects advanced understanding of mathematics, astronomy and religious symbolism, showing how temple design was closely linked to celestial movements. Archaeologists note the equinox was recorded in Sanskrit inscriptions and may have been tied to religious ceremonies during the Angkor period, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
Each year, the equinox attracts large numbers of domestic and international visitors, who gather at the western entrance of Angkor Wat to witness and photograph the spectacle.
The Ministry of Tourism has urged the public not to miss the event, calling it a unique opportunity to experience Cambodia’s cultural and natural heritage. Officials say the phenomenon also boosts tourism in Siem Reap during the early months of the year.
