PHNOM PENH, Mar 29, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s next generation of scientists and innovators took center stage at the Sci-Cup competition Saturday, underscoring government efforts to build a skilled workforce for a knowledge-based economy.

The contest, held during the 4th National Science, Technology and Innovation Day, highlighted the growing role of STEM education in driving long-term economic transformation.

Industry Minister Hem Vanndy said the government aims to move beyond technology consumption toward innovation. “We hope Cambodian youth will not only use technology, but become creators and developers of new solutions that strengthen the country’s resilience and competitiveness,” he told participants.

Organized by the National Institute of Science, Technology and Innovation, the competition drew high school students nationwide. Six finalists — two from Battambang and four from Phnom Penh — advanced to the final stage, with winners to be announced at the closing ceremony.

Institute Director General Keo Socheat said the event showcases more than academic excellence. “This platform highlights creativity, confidence and adaptability — essential qualities for future innovators who will contribute to Cambodia’s scientific and technological advancement,” he said.

The Sci-Cup forms part of broader national efforts to strengthen human capital in STEM fields as Cambodia seeks to diversify its economy and boost competitiveness regionally and globally.
