PHNOM PENH, April 17, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s banking and microfinance associations on Thursday dismissed as false social media claims that US authorities had frozen cash at local banks, warning the rumors were designed to erode public trust in the financial system.

The Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC) and the Cambodia Microfinance Association said the fabricated posts, widely circulated on Facebook, were “irresponsible and harmful,” creating confusion and undermining confidence in the sector.

Both groups voiced support for the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), which issued a swift clarification to counter the claims. They said the central bank’s response was vital in calming public concern and safeguarding stability.

The associations backed authorities’ efforts to pursue legal action against those spreading falsehoods, stressing that deliberate misinformation about licensed institutions risks sparking panic, disrupting financial activity and damaging the wider economy.

They urged the public to rely only on official statements from the NBC and licensed institutions, reaffirming their commitment to transparent communication and close cooperation with regulators to maintain confidence in Cambodia’s banking sector.
