EV Registrations Surge as Cambodia Accelerates Green Mobility Transition
PHNOM PENH, April 22, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s shift toward electric vehicles is gathering pace, with monthly registrations hitting record levels as government support and consumer interest drive adoption, officials said Wednesday.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport reported 1,676 EVs registered in March alone, including 1,293 cars, marking a sharp rise from 488 in January and 1,078 in February. The figures highlight a steady upward trend and growing confidence in cleaner transport options.

As of March, Cambodia had recorded 16,210 EVs nationwide — comprising 11,656 cars, 3,832 motorcycles and 722 three wheelers — reflecting a broadening shift across multiple vehicle segments.
Officials said the growth is fueled by rising environmental awareness and policies aimed at cutting emissions and improving air quality. The government has set a target of 30,000 EVs by 2030, part of a wider strategy to promote sustainable transport and strengthen energy security.
Transport Minister Peng Ponea said inter ministerial efforts are under way to introduce incentives, develop technical standards and expand infrastructure. A key priority is the rollout of charging stations nationwide, seen as essential to sustaining adoption and easing consumer concerns over range.
Cambodia has also adopted a national EV policy aligned with its long term goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, positioning electric mobility as a cornerstone of its green economy transition.
Officials said the surge in registrations signals momentum that could reshape Cambodia’s transport landscape in the years ahead.
