Chi Phat’s Green Season: Cambodia’s Rainforest Retreat Gains Momentum
PHNOM PENH, June 4, 2026 (KPT) — When monsoon rains sweep across Cambodia, the Cardamom Mountains burst into life — and Chi Phat, a once‑remote village in Koh Kong province, is emerging as a must‑see destination for travelers seeking waterfalls, mist‑covered forests and authentic community adventures.
Visitor numbers have surged since May, with more than 2,000 tourists arriving on weekends, according to the local ecotourism community. Improved road access has made the journey easier, said community leader Orn Sovann, who noted a sharp rise compared to last year. “Road conditions have improved considerably, making travel to Chi Phat much easier during the rainy season,” he said.

The star attraction is O’Malou Waterfall, where torrents cascade through pristine jungle. Treks, camping, firefly tours and sunset boat rides add to the appeal, while Cambodian families are rediscovering seasonal fruits such as durian and rambutan.
Resort owner Im Chhuon said domestic tourism has grown substantially this year, with visitors enchanted by the scenery at its green‑season peak.
Prime Minister Hun Manet on Wednesday underscored the government’s push to expand community‑based eco‑tourism, citing the completion of Phase 1 of the Knong Psar Green Retreat Project in Kampong Speu.
Designed to improve community services, the initiative enables residents to manage facilities and share economic benefits. Officials said the project has strengthened community ownership and created new opportunities for local businesses, with a newly established market allowing families to showcase and sell products.
Cambodia’s eco‑tourism sector has expanded rapidly in recent years, with more than 120 officially recognized community‑based sites nationwide. These destinations — ranging from forest retreats in the Cardamoms to mangrove conservation zones in Koh Kong — are managed by local communities to ensure profits stay within villages while protecting biodiversity.
Despite rising demand, Chi Phat’s operators have kept accommodation prices stable and urged visitors to book early and respect the environment. Tourism officials said the village’s popularity highlights how community‑based models can support livelihoods while showcasing Cambodia’s natural heritage.
For those willing to embrace the rain, Chi Phat offers more than a getaway: it is a living showcase of biodiversity, where waterfalls roar, forests flourish and local communities thrive alongside nature.
