MANILA, July 20, 2026 (KPT) – Foreign ministers from Southeast Asia are gathering in the Philippines this week for the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, with regional security, human rights and geopolitical tensions expected to dominate discussions.

The meetings, running from July 20 to 24, bring together ASEAN ministers and dialogue partners to review cooperation, economic integration and international developments.

Philippine Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary and ASEAN spokesperson Dominic Xavier Imperial said Monday the gathering would build on recent work and strengthen regional unity.

“Building on the momentum we have sustained over the past seven months, these meetings will advance key development priorities and further reinforce ASEAN community identity,” he said.

The programme opened with the 16th face‑to‑face meeting between ASEAN foreign ministers and representatives of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights, reflecting the bloc’s commitment to protecting fundamental freedoms, particularly for vulnerable groups.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., whose country chairs ASEAN, said the meetings would focus on dialogue and cooperation on regional security, deepening economic integration through innovation and sustainability, and improving resilience and well‑being.

Ministers also convened as the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon‑Free Zone Commission to review implementation of its 2023–2027 Plan of Action and discuss possible accession of additional states to the treaty’s protocol.

The formal opening of the 59th AMM takes place Tuesday, with ministers expected to adopt the Joint Communiqué and guidelines on ASEAN’s engagement with High Contracting Parties to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, alongside reviews of progress across ASEAN’s political‑security, economic and socio‑cultural pillars.
