Japan to provide patrol boats to Cambodia under security assistance programme

TOKYO, July 20, 2026 (KPT) – Japan will supply patrol boats and communications equipment to Cambodia’s military under its Official Security Assistance (OSA) programme, marking Phnom Penh’s first support package through the initiative.

The Japanese government announced the aid Sunday, with the package valued at 500 million yen (about $3.4 million), The Japan Times reported. The assistance underscores Tokyo’s growing security engagement with Southeast Asia as it seeks to strengthen partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.

Introduced in 2023, the OSA provides defence equipment and other security-related support to countries that share strategic interests with Japan. Unlike traditional overseas development aid, the programme is designed to bolster operational capacity and enhance security cooperation with partner nations.

Under the agreement, Cambodia will receive patrol boats to reinforce maritime security operations and communications gear to improve coordination and command capabilities.

Officials did not immediately disclose the delivery schedule, but the package is expected to boost Cambodia’s ability to safeguard its waters and respond to regional challenges.

Japan has steadily expanded security partnerships in recent years, deepening cooperation through defence assistance, capacity-building programmes and diplomatic outreach.

The initiative reflects Tokyo’s broader strategy to counterbalance growing regional tensions and to promote stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Cambodia is the first mainland Southeast Asian country to receive equipment support under the OSA framework, highlighting Japan’s intent to diversify its security ties beyond traditional allies.

The move comes as Phnom Penh seeks to modernize its defence capabilities while broadening cooperation with key partners in Asia.
