PHNOM PENH, June 9, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and the United States have signed a landmark Open Skies Agreement, a breakthrough in aviation ties expected to strengthen connectivity, tourism, trade and investment, officials said Monday.

The accord was announced after talks between Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Hunt VanderToll, joined by Mao Havannall, head of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA).

Cambodian officials said the deal capped more than 12 years of negotiations and provides a legal framework for future air services, airline partnerships and codeshare arrangements.

Direct flights may not begin immediately, but the agreement gives carriers greater flexibility in operating passenger and cargo routes, laying the foundation for stronger aviation links in the years ahead.

The pact comes as Washington backs Cambodia’s aviation expansion. The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation recently approved $100 million for Techo International Airport as part of a $2.5 billion Indo‑Pacific infrastructure package.

Aviation authorities said the deal and U.S. support signal confidence in Cambodia’s long‑term economic potential, reinforcing its ambition to become a regional hub for transport, tourism and investment. Enhanced air connectivity is expected to spur flows of tourists, investors and cargo, contributing to growth in trade and logistics.

SSCA added the agreement reflects growing economic cooperation between the two countries and increased international recognition of Cambodia’s development trajectory.
