Over 5,200 runners join Phnom Penh Half Marathon as Cambodia pushes sports tourism
PHNOM PENH, June 15, 2026 (KPT) — More than 5,200 runners from Cambodia and abroad took part in the 14th Phnom Penh International Half Marathon on Sunday, underscoring the country’s drive to expand sports tourism as a pillar of economic growth and global promotion, officials said.
The race, staged to mark the birthday anniversary of Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, drew 5,241 participants — including 4,561 Cambodians and 680 runners from 43 countries — a 4.6 percent increase from last year.

Tourism Minister Huot Hak, attending alongside Senior Minister and National Olympic Committee president Thong Khon, said the rising turnout reflects Cambodia’s growing appeal as a sports tourism destination.
“Sports and tourism are important partners in building social well‑being and driving economic growth,” Hak said. “The growing number of participants demonstrates Cambodia’s emergence as an attractive sports tourism hub in the region and globally.”
International contingents were led by runners from China, Japan, France, the Philippines and the United States, highlighting the event’s expanding reach.
The marathon showcases Cambodia as a safe and welcoming destination while promoting sustainable tourism. The annual race has become a flagship event, boosting international visibility, generating local economic benefits and encouraging healthier lifestyles among residents and visitors.
