Cambodia Demands Release of Fishermen Held by Thai Navy
PHNOM PENH, 23 February 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has lodged a formal protest against what it described as an unauthorised incursion by Thai naval vessels into its territorial waters.
In a statement issued on 22 February, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said ships from the Royal Thai Navy had conducted law enforcement operations inside Cambodia’s territorial sea, arresting three Cambodian fishermen and seizing their boat.
The ministry said the incident occurred about 7.2 nautical miles off Koh Yor in Koh Kong province. It denounced the actions as a “clear violation” of Cambodia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law.
Cambodia has demanded the immediate release of the detained nationals and the return of their vessel.
It also urged Bangkok to cease what it termed unauthorised naval patrols and law enforcement activities in Cambodian waters, and to take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
